Press Release
Emily voted onto Scottish Youth Parliament Board
The newly elected Scottish Youth Parliament met for the first time last weekend in Stirling and Shetland’s representative Emily Shaw was there. As well as taking an active part in the weekend’s events, she was elected to the Parliament’s 7-person Board of Trustees.
Having delivered a three minute speech on “What qualities do you think are important for a Trustee of a charity and how does this match your own skills and/or experiences” she was elected by a body of 126 Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) from throughout Scotland.
A clearly elated Emily said,
“I am absolutely thrilled to have been elected to serve on the Board. I’m sure that the role will bring real challenges and opportunities and cannot wait to begin work representing the views of MSYPs from all over Scotland.
“I am also very pleased that the membership voted to campaign for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans-gender (LGBT) marriage equality for the next nine months. I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into this campaign on both a local and a national level.
“Thank you to all MSYPs who voted, the SYP for their fantastic sitting and Shetland Islands Council for their continued support”.
Throughout the weekend the MSYPs took part in a variety of local social action projects including tree planting, gardening projects and street clean ups, all with the aim of promoting a positive image of young people. They also attended FestEco, a free, environmentally friendly festival to meet young people from the Stirling area.
The theme of the weekend was “Sustainability” and the parliament’s aim was to keep emissions as low as possible for the entire event. Interestingly, in order to emphasise how serious they were about the subject, all food served over the weekend was vegetarian to try to reduce their carbon footprint.
