Inspection of Blydehaven Nursery
Blyde to be excellent again!
Blydehaven have successfully managed to maintain their excellent standard of care and provision of pre-school education since the last time they had their HMIe report.
The nursery was inspected by HMIe in November 2009 and has received an excellent report. Out of the five areas that the HMIe inspected four were graded excellent and the fifth was graded a very good.
The nursery, which is a partner provider of pre-school education for the Schools Service and managed by Shetland College UHI, demonstrated particular strengths in:
- Highly motivated and enthusiastic children who are successful in their learning – excellent.
- Positive partnership with parents – excellent.
- Staff’s teamwork in providing challenging and quality learning experiences for the children – excellent.
- The leadership of the manager – excellent.
Children are achieving a high level of success in all aspects of their development and learning and are making excellent progress.
The curriculum is firmly based on play, active learning, enjoyment and children’s individual needs. Staff have made a very good beginning at revising the curriculum in line with Curriculum for Excellence, ensuring children have opportunities to take part in challenging experiences. Creativity is encouraged and children have excellent opportunities in outdoor learning.
Within the curriculum, the children develop an awareness of different cultures, understanding and caring for our world, and learning about Shetland through music and dance.
Staff have an excellent relationship with parents, and work in close partnership with services within the community to support the children’s learning.
Shetland College UHI provides very good support and guidance for the staff and management of resources. The manager provides excellent leadership and the staff work exceptionally well as a team. They create a very welcoming and positive learning environment for children and parents, and children’s well being is promoted through encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
George Smith commented, "I am absolutely delighted that the Blydehaven Nursery has achieved this excellent report from HMIe. It is a true recognition of the hard work put in by Marina Eva and her team and all those connected with the nursery. Every time I am in there it is evident how much everyone is enjoying themselves and the amount of learning going on is tremendous."
Schools Service recognises the considerable contribution that Blydehaven Nursery makes in the education of our young children and commends the dedication and hard work of the staff, and the leadership of the manager, in providing such a high quality service for children and their families.
Councillor Angus congratulated all staff at Blydehaven Nursery saying: ‘’this is another first class report from an early years partner provider. Parents must be reassured to know that their children receive such a high quality service’’.
Councillor Smith added his congratulations to all the staff involved, saying that this was an excellent report.
