Press Release

Look out for your Right to Vote

All households in Shetland should have now received a form asking for information to update the electoral register.  If your name is not on the Register of Electors then you will not be able to vote.  You may also find it difficult to get credit or open a bank account as credit reference agencies can use information on the register for credit checks and the prevention of money laundering.

There is also an edited version of the Register of Electors which is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose, for example, marketing. The electoral registration form includes an option for individuals to request that their names are not included in this version.

Senior Electoral Assistant for Shetland, Ian Leslie said:

“It is important that anyone who will turn 18 before the end of the year is included on the updated register. Please make sure that you complete and return the form as soon as possible.  Owners of vacant houses also need to return the forms for these properties.

“Registering for other services or paying Council Tax does not register you to vote.  Every household needs to fill in the electoral register form; if you don’t, you might lose your right to vote.”

If you have not received your form or have any questions about the Register of Electors, please contact the Electoral Registration Office at Charlotte House, Commercial Road, Lerwick, telephone 745700, email: ero@shetland.gov.uk
