An innovative new program, designed to offer parents practical tips on parenting, is now available in Shetland. The ‘Positive Parenting Program’ or Triple P as it has become known, is being offered through the Bruce Family Centre in Lerwick.

Eleanor Robertson the Bruce Family Centre Manager said she is keen that as many families as possible take advantage of this positive parenting support,

“Triple P is a free program for all parents of children, from birth to teenagers. Right from the start it offers practical tips and suggestions to suit the needs of individual families. It’s a great opportunity to meet other parents to share stories and give each other support. As we all know, there are no hard and fast rules for parenting. Sometimes it can feel like your child is the only one that constantly misbehaves and that every day is a battle. Triple P is a chance to talk through your worries and to get some practical advice. The program will help you understand how your own family works so you can use the things you already say and do in new and positive ways.”

However, as Mrs Robertson points out, the program is not just for parent who have concerns about their child’s behaviour:

“You may just want a bit of help to set up better routines at mealtimes or bedtime and want to create the happiest home life you can.

Triple P can help:

  • Encourage positive behaviour
  • Deal with problem behaviour
  • Become confident as a parent
  • Be realistic about parenting
  • Take care of yourself!”

Using group sessions with other parents, the program is able to give families the tools and information they need to start positive parenting at home. (Crèche facilities are available during the sessions). Parents also receive the extra support of a Triple P Practitioner who will guide them through every step of the way and even provide backup phone support to help then put their new skills into practice.

The next Triple P program will run after the October holidays. Parents interested in joining the sessions or who just want to find out more information, should contact Eleanor Robertson at the Bruce Family Centre on 01595 745400, or ask about Triple P at their local school, nursery or from their health visitor.
