Five SIC employees celebrated the end of a year’s hard work as they graduated from Aberdeen College this week.  They were all required to complete an HNC in Working with Communities as part of their employment conditions and rose to the challenge of studying while working full time.

Susan Jamieson, Ryan Jamieson, and James Leask are all Support Workers with Bridges; a project that aims to help young people aged 15 – 19 who are not in education, employment or training. They offer alternative learning intervention aimed at developing social and interpersonal skills.

Wendy Lowe and Lesley Gray work as Youth Development Workers in the south of Shetland and the North Isles respectively.

The group learned via video conference thanks to an agreement between Shetland Islands Council and Aberdeen College and were visited by their tutor Nicola Scott up to twice a month.

All five have enjoyed studying remotely but have sometimes found it a challenge to juggle study with full time employment.

Mr Leask said: “It was a lot to take on as we all had full-time jobs and some of us work as support workers at night as well, but looking back it was worth it.

“I enjoyed the studying part of it so much I am going to find out about studying for a BA in Community Learning and Development remotely”.
