Shetland Input/Output Household Survey
An Input/Output survey has been commissioned by Shetland Islands Council to establish what people spend their money on, and how much is being spent locally as against outside Shetland. Over 600 households will receive a postal questionnaire and a further sample will be interviewed face to face.
The main purpose of this study is to provide the Council with a detailed set of statistics on the nature and performance of the economy of Shetland. This data will provide valuable information on the current position of industry sectors, and their interaction and contribution to Shetland’s prosperity.
The results of the household survey will also help inform the Council of the likely impacts of budget cuts on the wider economy and local households.
The Hutton Institute in Aberdeen and locally based A B Associates have been asked to undertake the necessary survey work, data analysis and presentation of results. The study updates similar ones undertaken in 2004 and 1994. All replies will be completely anonymous, and treated in the strictest confidence. The data received will be aggregated so that none will be traceable to individual responses.
Douglas Irvine of SIC Economic Development Unit said, “I would like to encourage everyone who has received a questionnaire to complete it as best as they can. The information when aggregated together will provide valuable statistics on household expenditure patterns, the interaction between industry sectors, and the leakage of money out of Shetland. I am looking forward to seeing the results and using the data to support and inform our future policy work.”
All completed surveys returned by the 25th November will be entered into a prize draw to win a Luxury Christmas Hamper containing Shetland products.
