Shetland tops “Earth Hour” table
With just around eighteen days to go until Earth Hour, Shetland is already proving to be thoroughly behind the campaign, ranking first in local authority areas that have signed up to take part in the switch off, this year being held on Saturday 26th March from 8.30pm.
The table of sign-ups to Earth Hour, which is organised by WWF, saw Shetland reaching the top spot on Monday 7th March, above the likes of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Oxfordshire. The table is constantly changing as people sign up to show their support in each area.
Earth Hour is an international campaign that asks individuals, households and businesses to switch off their lights for one hour, to help reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
In 2010, a record 126 countries and territories took part with an estimated one billion people switching off, and in 2011 it is hoped more will get involved.
