Press Release
"Sound Choices" launches this week
Residents in the Sound area of Lerwick are to be given the chance to vote on how £12,500 should be spent to benefit their local community.
"Sound Choices" will involve residents and community organisations in the Sound area identifying community issues and coming up with ideas and projects which address them.
Residents can drop in to the Baila Room at the Sound Hall on Saturday 19th November between 3pm and 8pm to find out more about the process, complete a questionnaire and discuss any ideas they may have. They will have the chance to share their views on what's good, what's maybe not so good about their local community, and most importantly come up with ideas on how things could be improved.
Project coordinators are very enthusiastic about getting underway knowing what has been achieved over the last year and a half in the North Staney Hill area through the “Wir Community, Wir Choice” project.
Maggie Dunne, Executive Manager of SIC Environment Health and Trading Standards said:
"This is a real opportunity for residents of Sound to say what makes their community special and come up with ideas to make it a better place to live; these ideas may not cost very much to start up but would make all the difference to people in the community. The consultation is your first chance to share your ideas and we can start seeing these changes happening over the next year."
June Porter of the Council's Community Work Service said:
"We want the whole community to get involved and have a say. What we've learned from the North Staney Hill is that these projects enable community groups and the Council to better understand the needs of residents in the area.
“Sound Choices provides a different way for the Council and other agencies to work in partnership with the community - a way which gives local people a real say and choice about what happens in their community."
Newsletters will be delivered to every household in the coming week, followed in early November by a household questionnaire. Sound School and the Council's Youth Service are on board and ready to involve children and young people in schools and youth clubs.
