Trading Standards warning about share-buying scam

The Council's Trading Standards Service is warning people in Shetland to be wary of phone calls from people offering to buy shares at severely inflated prices.

David Marsh, Trading Standards Service Manager, says: "This has all the hallmarks of a scam, in which an offer which is really too good to be true is used to tempt people into handing over some kind of 'administration fee' which will never be seen again. We know that at least three local folk have been called about this 'offer' in the past week, and we want to make sure that nobody is taken in and conned into losing money."

Trading Standards advise anyone who receives such a call not to enter into any agreement over the phone - and definitely not to disclose any personal financial information such as bank account details, or credit or debit card numbers. They should also report the caller to the Financial Services Authority's Consumer Helplineon 0845 606 1234.

General consumer advice is always available at www.shetland.gov.uk/tradingstandards, by calling Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 or Trading Standards on 01595 744887, or in person at the Council's Grantfield office.
