Voting not just for geeks, says new campaign
FOUR pupils from the Anderson High School met today to promote the “I Vote – Does this make me a geek?” campaign, aimed at encouraging young people to vote in the upcoming Scottish Elections in May.
Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP), Emily Shaw and Nicole Mouat were joined by James Aitken and Hayden Thomason, who will all be voting for the first time on 5 May.
The campaign seeks to challenge the stereotype that young people who vote are “geeks” by wearing “geeky” style thick rimmed black glasses and encouraging people to update their social network profiles with photographs wearing the glasses.
Shetland’s MSYPs are speaking to young people about voting and how politics affects them and the issues they care about. Emily Shaw MSYP said:
“I think issues like tuition fees have brought politics and voting to the forefront for young people.
“It’s important for young people to vote to make sure our views are represented in Parliament.”
