Very successful Primary Schools Netball Competition

Bells Brae netball team with trophy

Thirteen teams took part in this year’s primary schools netball competition at the Clickimin Centre on Thursday. Bell’s Brae Primary were eventually crowned champions, but only after some very exciting games. Active Schools Coordinator Mandy Henderson provides an account of the day below:

The teams were split into two groups and played a round-robin format with excellent netball on both sides of the hall.

Having completed the morning session and after a well deserved lunch break, the teams were ready for more action. Tingwall, Whiteness, Scalloway, Cunningsburgh, Lunnasting/Urafirth, Sound, Dunrossness and Happyhansel played friendlies against each other while four teams moved into the semi-finals Brae v Bells Brae and Sandwick v Whalsay. (Whalsay making it just in front of Sound on goal difference).

Bells Brae shooters were on form and pulled ahead giving a score of 7-1 and into the final. Sandwick and Whalsay showed very determined play on court with Sandwick eventually winning 8-4.

All was set for the final Bells Brae v Sandwick. Both teams were excited but kept their shape on court and the ball travelled from end to end quickly giving a half time score of 6-4 to Bells Brae. The hall was loud and noisy as the spectators all cheered on the teams. The second half got off to a good start as the Bells Brae shooters tucked away the goals to increase their lead but Sandwick players never gave up and intercepted passes to gain possession on many occasions .The final whistle blew and Bells Brae had won 13-8.

The Jill Ford Shield was presented by Megan Keppie, from the winning AHS Scottish Schools Netball team, to joint captains Libby Fox and Iona Middleton from the Bells Brae team. Emma Leask also took along the Scottish Schools Cup won recently by AHS to show to the primary school teams

Mrs Henderson commented on the tournament, “I was really pleased to see all the teams taking part in the competition and contributing to a successful day. A special mention must go to Lunnasting and Urafirth schools who came together to form two combined teams to enter the competition”.
