First Adult Learners' Conference

A Learners’ Conference was held last weekend, sponsored by Learning Connections and opened by Alistair Carmichael MP.

Alistair told delegates about his own lifelong learning journey and how he had returned to learn as an adult.  The main speaker was James Grant from Moray Learners’ Forum, who told the conference about his first steps into learning as a literacies learner and how he had grown in confidence to join the Moray Learners forum; James now takes an active role in contributing to national and international conferences and was involved in organising a learners’ conference in Nairn last year in which six Shetlanders participated.

The Shetland learners thoroughly enjoyed last Saturday’s conference.  As well as listening to Alistair and James, learners and tutors took part in workshops to learn a bit more about dyslexia and making life choices as well as taster sessions in karate and card making.

The conference agreed that more learning events were needed, and that there should be events in rural parts of Shetland, rather than everything being Lerwick centred. They also agreed that there should be debate about setting up a Learners Forum in Shetland as a means of consultation, to support each other, to carry out projects, and promote lifelong learning.
