Graduate ESOL party at the Town Hall

There were lots of happy faces at the Town Hall last Thursday evening as students and their families celebrated the successful completion of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses

28 learners from Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Ukraine, Chile, Philippines and Egypt, Belarus, Czech Republic, Poland and Latvia were awarded certificates as part of Shetland College and Adult Learning’s joint ESOL programme.

A number of students want to go on to gain UK citizenship and need to prove that they are competent in English and have knowledge of UK citizenship when applying for citizenship.  Last year a new qualification was introduced in Scotland combining citizenship and English language. Shetland College is amongst the first colleges in Scotland to offer the new qualification and the 28 students are amongst the first in Scotland to gain the joint qualification.

Cllr Andrew Hughson, and George Smith, Director of Shetland College presented ESOL certificates to:

Lah Adamson, Brenda Carter, Kate Farmer, Dungkhae Jamieson, Pingjai Pimrath, Seangphet Phimjaret, Kate Robertson, Lamyai Sim, Nina Sim, Bo Wiseman, Nungnatee Falconer, Wasana Fullerton, Woraporn Hunter, Beth Farrer, Adel Hassan, Ondrej Balda, Viktoria Indrica, Alina Karol, Jelena Kosinoka, Sam Lee, Hazel Minn, Alla Mullay, Andrea Orduna, Radka Paleckova, Irina Peterson, Svitlana Ramsay, Juliya Shestakova and Tanya Ward.

The event had an international flavour with food provided by the Olive Tree and world music and dance from Joy Duncan's group Aestaewest.

Cllr Hughson, Chair of Shetland College Board said

" The exuberant faces of the students is something that will stay with me for a long time"

Nancy Heubeck Adult Learning Manager said

"Students worked hard to gain these certificates - thanks to teachers, Celia Smith, Jim Taylor and Catriona Cree-Hay for helping students through the courses and to volunteer tutors for their support. We are delighted that so many students have passed this new qualification and hope that it leads to some of the learners gaining UK citizenship."
