Shetland Islands Council to raise the Commonwealth Flag
On Commonwealth Day (Monday 10 March) Her Majesty The Queen will 'break' the Commonwealth Flag outside the Great West Door of Westminster Abbey and Shetland Islands Council will be raising the flag at the Town Hall to mark the occasion.
At 10.00am that day, over 500 Commonwealth Flags will be raised by local authorities and community groups throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man in celebration of Commonwealth Day. It will be the largest, single raising of this flag in the history of the Commonwealth.
Councillor Cecil Smith, who will be raising the flag in Lerwick, will also read a message of 'good wishes' from Her Majesty The Queen, along with the Commonwealth Affirmation. He says: “I’m delighted to be able to represent Shetland Islands Council taking part in this unique event. It’s a real honour to ‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth’ and celebrate Commonwealth Day with the rest of the UK in this way.”
