Pupils from Tingwall School will compete in the Scottish final of Euroquiz in May, after winning today’s local heat between Shetland schools. The competition, organised by the Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET) is aimed at P6 classes to encourage pupils to learn facts about the countries of Europe.
Primary pupils from six Shetland schools – Dunrossness, Cunningsburgh and Tingwall Primary Schools; and Mid Yell, Aith and Sandwick Junior High Schools – took part in the quiz today at Islesburgh Community Centre, answering 60 questions in four rounds on geography, language, culture, history and general knowledge of Europe. A tense fifth and final round, in a head-to-head format, saw the team from Tingwall Primary School triumph over the team from Aith JHS.
The final round of the today’s local Euroquiz heat saw two teams of P6 pupils from Tingwall Primary School and Aith Junior High School compete for a place in the national final. The Tingwall pupils will now represent Shetland at the national final, that will be held at the Scottish Parliament in May, where school teams from around 30 local authorities are expected to take part.
Local organiser, Lewie Peterson from the Schools Service said: “I always look forward to the local Euroquiz heats and I’ve been impressed again today by the pupils’ enthusiasm and depth of knowledge of Europe. I’d like to congratulate all the teams for their performances today and thank the school staff who have provided support to them in recent weeks."
