Shetland Islands Council ‘Cautious’ on Northern Isles Ferry Contract
Shetland Islands Council’s Transport Spokesperson, Councillor Gordon Mitchell, has reacted with caution to this morning’s announcement that the northern isles ferry contract is to be re-tendered earlier than originally planned.
Councillor Mitchell said:
“ We shall need to study what is being proposed very carefully. In principle, a move that secures the future of the service would be welcome. However, we would want to be reassured that the best features of the present NorthLink service will be retained under the new contact. The inclusion of freight and livestock services – if handled properly – would be a significant step forward.”
Councillor Mitchell added that adequate consultation with the communities in Orkney and Shetland must be an integral part of the re-tendering exercise. “We expect the Scottish Executive to take proper account of the needs of the travelling public and of the businesses that depend on this lifeline service. The Council will wish to play a full and constructive part in that consultation process.”
