Local Contractor wins Gremista Waste Management Facility Contract (Landfill Site)
Following an extensive tendering exercise including a comprehensive assessment, local contractor Garriock Bros. Ltd. has won a five-way competition to build the new Gremista Waste Management Facility for Shetland Islands Council.
Garriock Bros. Ltd. will join the established project team comprising of council officials and consulting engineers Mott MacDonald. The addition of Garriock Bros. Ltd. to the team completes the range of skills to ensure the successful completion of this project.
A Garriock Bros. Spokesperson said “We are really delighted to have won this contact. It is a real feather in our cap to have come out top in the face of some major national competition. The tender process led to a pretty intensive period of work and involved other companies on the islands as well as some from down south. There was no doubt that the project will be challenging, with the weather likely to play a big part. We are now working hard to get the project up and running, and are looking forward to working with our partners to make this project a success. Sadly we will greatly miss Gary Manson, who would have been a key member of our team.”
Councillor Jim Irvine Chair of Infrastructure Committee said “I am delighted that not only did local companies have the opportunity to tender for this specialist work but that a local contractor was able to win on price and quality against some large national and specialist companies. This not only safeguards local jobs but provides confidence in the market that Shetland companies can compete at the highest level providing a high quality product.”
The waste management facility comprises a recycling centre for bulky household waste, metals, glass, waste oil and batteries, a materials sorting shed to separate and recycle industrial and commercial waste and a landfill site, which provides complete containment of all waste.
Councillor Jim Henry spokesperson for the Environment said “The new waste management facility will be a valuable asset to Shetland providing not only a local solution for the disposal of waste but also improving our capability to recycle more.”
Construction is programmed to commence in May 2004 with completion scheduled for October 2005.
