Health Checks for Council Staff
Shetland Islands Council is preparing for Scotland's Health at Works (SHAW) silver assessment in the summer of 2005.
Part of the minimum requirement for this award is to offer a lifestyle check to staff. This will consist of measurements of height, weight, body-mass index, blood pressure, blood glucose level, levels of carbon monoxide for smokers and cholesterol readings, if requested. The facility will be provided as a proactive measure to help individuals pursue a healthier lifestyle. Undertaking a check is voluntary and results are confidential to the staff member. If any part of the assessment causes concern, staff will be advised to follow this up with their own GP.
A lifestyle review can be prompt to influence people to make changes to improve their health. The Council is committed to improving staff health and well-being and raising health awareness. It is proposed to run a series of clinics, 1 day per month or as required, throughout the Council's workplaces over a 3-year period.
The Council is seeking to engage a qualified nurse to carry out this work and interested partied should respond to the contract notice which is in the Public Notices section of this paper.
