Council Launches Anti Litter Hotline -744810

The Council's Infrastructure Services Department has launched a litter reporting hotline.

The number is Lerwick 744810 and it will be available during normal working hours. Members of the public are asked to phone and report :-

- general littering

- verge side litter

- overflowing litter bins

- flytipping

- overflowing community council skips

- litter left after the skip has gone

- Graffiti on public property

- dog fouling

- vandalism of public property

The phone line is one of the initiatives developed under Shetland's prize winning litter prevention plan (2002-2007).  This plan is a partnership between the Council, the  police SEPA, Shetland Amenity Trust, Lerwick Port Authority, the Community Council Association and keep scotland beautiful.

A litter survey carried out in Shetland showed that 80% of those surveyed expressed disatisfaction with the levels of litter and dog fouling in shetland.  The new dedicated hotline will give people the oppertunity of phoning a dedicated number to give details of litter related issues.

This new service will allow the council to be more responsible and deal with litter related issues much quicker. It will also, by analysing the complaints recieved, be able to target resources to the areas where they are most needed, and assist in awareness raising and enforcing campaigns.

This initiative is part of the ongoing development of the litter prevention plan aimed at improving shetland's environment. The success of the line and its effectiveness depends on the public's willingness to advise on areas of dissatisfaction and the public and therefore encouraged to all the number and assist the council in improving services
