Local Government Work Experience Placements open for Shetland Graduates
Shetland Islands Council, recognising its role as a major employer in the islands, is to recruit fifteen recent university graduates for its Graduate Placement Scheme. The scheme provides real opportunities for new degree level graduates to gain experience in and contribute to local government services in Shetland.
A total of 15 graduates will be recruited into a veriety of placements throughout the Council.
Applications are invited from those who have graduated since may 2003, or who will attain their degree before the end of the year.
A range of placement oppertunities exists across Council service areas, suitable for a wide range of degree subjects. Sucessful candidates will undertake a placement in one of the service
areas for 12 months. The scheme is designed to provide graduates with relevent postgraduate experience but it does not provide a guarantee of continued employment for relevent posts that may arise within the Council at any time during their placement.
"The Graduate Placement programme provides a structure and training that supports new graduates through what is often their first professional work experience," says Emma Lowes, SIC Personnel Officer, who took up employment with the council herself through the programme nearly three years ago. "The scheme provides a very good introduction to working in a corporate environment and offers a sound first step on a professional career ladder." Emma says.
Previous Graduates have been very successful in finding employment within Shetland Islands Council and with other local employers such as Shetland Enterprise, Smyril Line and Shetland Island Games 2005.
Graduates have also gone onto do post graduate qualifications, set up their own businesses or are working for local goverment on the Mainland.
The salery for a 12-month placement will be £12,873 inclusive of Islands Allowance. Details of how to apply for the scheme are appearign in local press recruitment adverising.
