SIC Graduate Trainee Earns Place in National Contemporary Issues Debate
Shetland Islands Council Graduate Placement trainee Robert Lowes flies to London this weekend, to represent Shetland and Scotland in debate, at the prestigious Young United Kingdom Programme.
Eight delegates, selected from one hundred and thirty people aged between 18 and 29, will take part in a series of presentations, testimonies and debates organised by the Institute of Contemporary Scotland, to be held before an audience of invited guests at The Royal Society of Medicine.
Robert, who works in the Economic Development Unit's marketing section, won his place while debating at the Young Scotland and Northern Ireland Programme at Pitlochry last November; where he was Runner Up Speaker of the Year. Three other finalists from Scotland and Northern Ireland will be joining him.
The Young UK Programme is designed to bring people from a variety of geographic, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds and expose them to the most original contemporary thinking and enlarge their social awareness by enhancing their understanding of the problems of society.
Robert's address on an international topic will focus on the issue of occupied Palestine. His choice for an address on a personal inspirational figure is American documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, who recently won the Palm D'Or at Cannes for his controversial film Fahrenheit 911.
Patrons of the programme include Magnus Magnusson, Patrick Moore, Anna Ford, Diana Rigg, John McCarthy and Terry Waite.
