Shetland Students doing Well

91% of students at Shetland College successfully completed their courses or progressed to further studies, according to figures published today by the Scottish Further Education Funding Council

The performance indicators published today show how each of the colleges in Scotland performed in the year 2002/2003.  The 91% success rate at Shetland College compares with 76% nationally.

The figures show that between 2000 and 2003 there was a significant increase in the number of students enrolling for part-time courses at Shetland College.  They show that in Shetland women in further education outnumbered men by more than 2 to 1.  The figures also show the age range of students, with the over 40s making up the biggest group at Shetland College, followed by the over 25s and then young school leavers under 18.

The figures also indicate the priority the college gives to special provision with 20% on special programmes or with extended learning support, more than twice the national average.

Shetland College Principal Gordon Dargie said, "These figures show that having more students at the college has not resulted in lower standards and the figures reflect a lot of hard work by our students and staff.  They deserve their success."
