Hamnavoe Continues the Good Work
Hamnavoe Primary Wins Second Eco School Award
Hamnavoe Primary School has achieved its second Eco School award following a recent assessment. The school extended the work previously carried out on the school's environment by developing a comprehensive action plan based round healthy eating, anti bullying actions and playground activities.
The Eco School programme develops understanding and actions around seven themes which have to be integrated into the school's overall development plan. These are school grounds, litter, waste minimisation and recycling, transport, energy, water and healthy living.
Mary Lisk, spokesperson on behalf of the accrediting body Encams said, "Hamnavoe has continued the good work by diversifying into other areas of the programme. We were particularly impressed by the knowledge of the committee members and parent representatives. Any school which can persuade pupils to eat healthy lunch packs and enjoy them, which they clearly did, deserves an award".
Formal presentation of the school's second flag will take place before Christmas.
Shetland now holds nineteen awards over nine schools. This means that a quarter of Shetland schools are now formally accredited as Eco Schools. Over 70% of Shetland schools are now registered with and working on the programme.
