Shetland Disability Sport
Chief Executive of Scottish Disability Sport, Gavin MacLeod visited Shetland last week with Emma O Callaghan, Development Manager for Disability Sport, Sportscotland. Mr Macleod and Ms O Callaghan met with officials from the SIC and voluntary sector agencies and held a public meeting in Clickimin Centre to discuss the possibility of developing a branch of Scottish Disability Sport (SDS) in Shetland.
Scottish Disability Sport (SDS) is a National Governing Body for disability sport in Scotland and its vision is to lead the development of sport and physical recreation for people with disabilities in Scotland. There are 17 local branches affiliated to SDS that are responsible for the development of sport and recreation for people with disabilities at a local level. Each branch supports local sporting and physical activity opportunities and provides links to national participation.
A local branch would create sporting opportunities for children and adults to take part in leisure and recreation and participate in national competitions. It is hoped the first meeting of the Shetland branch will be held in February 2005.
If you are interested in becoming involved in disability sport locally whether as a coach, volunteer or committee member please contact Donna Mainland, Development Officer - Disabilities, Sport and Leisure Service, Community Development, Shetland Islands Council, Hayfield House, Lerwick, Shetland.
