Health Checks for Council Staff

Shetland Islands Council is preparing for Scotland's Health at Works (SHAW) silver assessment in the summer of 2005.

Part of the requirement for this award is to offer a lifestyle check to staff, which consists of measuring blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and body mass index.  The clinics will be provided as a proactive measure to aid individuals to pursue a healthier lifestyle.

The first clinic was held on 28th October.  The clinics will rotate throughout Council workplaces offering confidential health checks to 12 members of staff each month for a 3 year period.  If any part of the assessment causes concern staff will be advised to follow up by seeing their own GP.

Chief Executive Morgan Goodlad said, "This is an excellent initiative, it is often too easy to avoid checking on yourself from time to time.  You owe it to yourself, your family and friends and to the Council as a valued employee, it doesn't hurt and you will feel better as a result."

Councillor Florence Grains is very much in favour of the Health Checks initiative and she made the following comment "I think this is an excellent idea.  I have had a health check and am delighted with the results".
