Hazardous Waste Found in Skip Again
A 7lb tin of Cymag was found in a Community Council skip at Walls on Thursday 28th October 2004 and was reported by a member of the public to Environmental Health. It has now been removed and will be disposed of safely.
This material is primarily used to kill rabbits. It is extremely toxic and when wet releases Hydrogen Cyanide gas. Lead Officer for Environmental Health, John Leach said that this was an extremely irresponsible act give the potential danger, other users were at serious risk should they have come into contact with the powder or if it had got damp and gas was released. Following on from the incident last year in Burra where a rocket flare from a skip had hit a car he urged anyone to contact the Department if they have a need to dispose of potentially hazardous materials.
The Council's skip service is for the disposal of bulky household refuse only.
Certain types of materials such as poisons or incendiary devices have the potential to injure either other users of the skip, the collectors or the waste management personnel.
