Kerbside Recycling Scheme

Lerwick and Scalloway

Shetland Islands Council's Waste Services would like to thank householders in Lerwick and Scalloway taking part in the glass and can kerbside recycling scheme which started on 01 November 2004.

In this first week the scheme diverted for recycling two and a half tonnes of glass and cans which would otherwise have been disposed as waste.  Initial figures for week two of the fortnightly collection show that more people are participating in the scheme than in the first week.  This week's recycling tonnage is therefore likely to top the three and a half tonne mark.

This upward trend will mean that for November alone, on current figures, over 10 tonnes of glass and cans will be diverted for recycling rather than being disposed of as waste.  On an annual basis this would mean an extra 150 tonnes of materials for recycling being obtained in a way that makes it as easy as possible for the public.

The Council's Waste Services wish to thank the public for their support for the scheme and would encourage anyone not yet participating to consider doing so in light of the proven positive support from the community.

Should anyone have a query about the scheme they can contact Mary Lisk at Waste Services on (01595) 744818.
