Inspection of Happyhansel Primary School Nursery Class by HMIe

The Care Commission and HM Inspectorate of Education (HMIe) inspected Happyhansel Primary School Nursery Class in September as part of the integrated inspection programme.  At the time of the inspection the role was 14.

The nursery was inspected against five National Care Standards.

  • It was found to have safe, secure bright and attractive environment in which staff have created a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
  • Staff interacted very well with children in a caring and professional manner, with high expectations of children's behaviour.
  • The curriculum offered was found to be good, with a very good programme for emotional, personal and social development; a very good programme for communication and language; a good programme for expressive and aesthetic development, as well as a good programme for physical development and movement.
  • They found that staff supported children and families very well and involved parents as partners in their children's education and supported education at home.  Support for children with additional needs was very good.
  • They highlighted the teamwork of all the staff, along with the fact that they were all caring, enthusiastic and very committed to the nursery.  They also recognised that the school was in the process of changing management, which had resulted in some weaknesses.  Here they highlighted the lack of a development plan and the lack of self-evaluation.  However, they recognised that the new temporary Head Teacher had impacted positively on the nursery and shared her vision of its future with staff.

The report requested that the school develop an action plan indicating how they will address the main findings in the report.  This has been completed and is available from the school to parents and carers.  The school and the Education Service are pleased that so much good practice has been highlighted and are committed to making the improvements recommended to enhance the educational experience even further.
