Agreement Between BP and Shetland Islands Council on Towage Services
The Council yesterday received written confirmation from BP that they agree the Council should assume responsibility for the towage service from 1 January 2005. This is consistent with the agreement reached for the continuance of Sullom Voe Terminal post 2000 in which the industry could ask the Council to assume responsibility for the service at any time after 2000.
The Council will contract the service to Shetland Towage Limited until such time as the company is merged into the port operations at Sullom Voe.
Convener Sandy Cluness said "Safety and the environment are the Council's prime concerns at Sullom Voe and it is important that towage is integrated into the port operation. Shetland Towage Limited has retained a highly skilled and dedicated workforce and I am happy to see them transferring to the Council, where I trust there is work for many years to come".
Councillor Bill Manson, Chairman of Shetland Charitable Trust said "I am delighted the uncertainty on the contractual position has been removed from the workforce and I know they will continue to provide the service required by industry users".
