Continued Provision of Community Council Skip Service
Proper Disposal of Hazardous Household Waste
The Council, following discussions with its insurers, have agreed to continue to provide the Community Council Skip Service subject to implementing a number of measures aimed at reducing the risk to users of the service. These include:
- The provision of a free uplift service for any item of hazardous household waste, which would not be appropriate to place in the skips, and;
- on-going inspections of the skips to identify and remove potentially hazardous items which have irresponsibly been placed in them.
Councillor Jim Irvine, Chairman of Infrastructure Services Committee, said:
"There has been a lot of effort over the last 2 weeks to save this very important and valued service but it ultimately needs to public to act responsibly. There is a real risk that this service could be removed if hazardous items are found in skips. The Council will be contacting all Community Councils over the next few weeks to consult on ways in which this service can be made safer".
It should be stressed that the Community Council skips are for the disposal of bulky household refuse only. Members of the public are urged to contact the Council by telephoning 01595 744800 or emailing infrastructure@sic.shetland.gov.uk if they have any items which could be deemed hazardous and arrange for a free uplift.
Such items include: gas cylinders/bottles, oil, explosives, fire extinguishers, syringes, asbestos, batteries, boat flares, pesticides, chemicals and dead animals.
