Pelagic Processing in Scalloway

Fresh Catch, a major pelagic processing company from the north east of Scotland have chosen Scalloway as their preferred location to expand their business in the heart of the pelagic fishing grounds.

Following successful meetings between the Council and the firm over the past couple of weeks it has emerged that Fresh Catch’s desire to expand and set up operations during 2006 will take place in one of the hardest hit areas in Shetland in recent years.  Scalloway has over the past year lost in excess of over 140 jobs from the down turn in the fishing industry and this therefore comes as a major boost to the local economy.  The factory will employ in the region of 100-120 people and provide additional support for ancillary services connected to the fishing industry.  Shetland Islands Council has given a clear indication of support to the company and will provide the necessary infrastructure in terms of harbour development to ensure that the plant can operate successfully.

Chairman of Economic Development for SIC, Drew Ratter commented that  “This is, of course, good news for Scalloway, but it is very good news for Shetland as a whole. Scalloway is a natural centre for fish processing in Shetland, with its proximity to the important fishing grounds.

He went on: “At the same time the whole of Shetland will benefit, because, with our good roads, commuting to employment from throughout the islands is much more of an option than it used to be.”

Mr Ratter concluded: “We have a number of folk across the council to thank for the work they have put in in attracting this major operator to the islands. We have a few hurdles to cross yet, but I am very confident.”

The Council has over recent months focused attention on Scalloway and has been looking to encourage business development in the Blacksness area.  Local councillor Iris Hawkins said: “The notices of motion that I put through Council were to focus attention on Scalloway and the impact the loss of jobs connected with the fishing industry has had.  The potential for this development will be a huge boost to the area and ensure that Blacksness in Scalloway harbour is used for the purpose for which it has been developed.  I am personally delighted that Fresh Catch intend to come to Scalloway and look forward to working with them”.

For this operation to succeed, European funding will be required. On an £18 million project this will amount to a 5% legal member state contribution, from SIC and the HIE network.

Some limited dredging and pier works (the pier works already in the harbour capital programme) will be required.
