Livestock Shipping Update

Following a meeting of the Northern Isles Livestock Shipping Working Group, in Orkney on the 24 May 2005, representatives of the Agricultural industry in Shetland and Orkney have called for the Scottish Executive to make suitable provision for the transportation of livestock in the specification for the re-tender of shipping services between Shetland, Orkney and Aberdeen.

These arrangements included improved lairage facilities, 2 new freight vessels, and double deck containers suitable to meet peak demand for the transportation of livestock from Shetland to Aberdeen. The use of the dedicated stock boat should remain until the appropriate alternatives are in place.

Councillor Alastair Inkster Vice-Chair of the Infrastructure Committee said

“The meeting had been very useful and there was agreement that these improvements were needed if a viable service is to be maintained to the agricultural community.”
