New Anderson High School - Lerwick, Shetland

Shetland Islands Council is to appoint Building Design Partnership to design the New Anderson High School.

After a tendering exercise, Shetland Islands Council has selected Building Design Partnership as their preferred designer for the New Anderson High School, which will be constructed on the site next to the existing school.

Last year, the Council completed a feasibility study that demonstrated that a new school could be built on the site at the Knab whilst keeping the existing school in operation. Since then, a tendering exercise has been carried out which short-listed eight lead consultancy teams and has now resulted in the selection of Building Design Partnership.

A new Anderson High School has been a council aspiration for many years and this appointment will enable the detailed briefing and early design stages to start in the summer.  An extensive consultation and information sharing exercise involving the public, pupils, neighbours, school and education staff, and other agencies will start at the beginning of the process and will continue throughout the project. This will enable all views and opinions to be considered in the briefing process.  A project office will be established in the Anderson High School where information on the project will be displayed and pupils will be encouraged to take an active part in the process.

Building Design Partnership has extensive recent experience of designing inspirational schools throughout Britain. They are bringing together a specialist education team for this project.

The Council is looking forward to a design that will enable the school to continue to provide high quality education in a new and stimulating environment.

Councillor Bill Manson, Education Spokesperson commented  ‘The Council is delighted to see another milestone passed on the way to a new Anderson High School.  We are satisfied that our team has chosen an experienced Design Team which will provide a challenging and educationally exciting design.’
