Fixed Penalty Notices for Littering
Environmental Health has issued the first seven fixed penalty notices for littering and dog fouling. Where Environmental Health receives evidence that a littering offence has been committed, the person believed to have committed the offence will be issued with a notice requiring them to pay the Council £50. If the fine is not paid within 14 days Environmental Health will prepare a report on the case for the Procurator Fiscal who may decide to pursue the non-payment of the fixed penalty notice with the Sheriff.
The notices have been served on people for dropping cigarette ends, dropping paper out of cars, failing to present domestic and commercial refuse correctly for collection and on a mobile home owner who emptied the contents of their toilet on the ground.
Enforcement is an important strand in the Council’s strategy to keep Shetland Green and Clean, through a combination of education and enforcement the Council is reminding people to be responsible by not littering and by clearing up after their dogs.
