Hamnavoe School Successful in National Photographic Competition
A photograph of Scalloway Castle with the fishing boat Heritage in the foreground has won Kathryn Moar, a former pupil of Hamnavoe School, the top prize in a national photographic competition for primary school children.
The subject of the competition, organised by the Scottish Civic Trust and Historic Scotland, was to capture a building, monument or historic site in a memorable image.
The winners were selected by celebrated Scottish landscape and wildlife photographer Colin Baxter.
Kathryn’s was not the only successful entry from Hamnavoe School. Leighton Black’s picture of Freefield Phone Box and Burra Lighthouse by Hayley Ritch were both Highly Commended. Photographs by Toni Laurenson and Ewan Jamieson were also amongst the finalists.
Head teacher of Hamnavoe School, Michael Hannah, said, ”The competition has allowed the children an opportunity to explore their local heritage and to identify those buildings that they most treasure. The range of subjects chosen by the children to photograph was very interesting. I should like to congratulate them all on their excellent pictures. To do so well in a national competition is a great achievement.”
Kathryn’s winning picture will be forwarded to the International Heritage Photographic Experience in Barcelona, for publication as one of Scotland’s entries in a catalogue of winning pictures from across Europe.
All the Scottish entries will be exhibited at the Scottish Civic Trust’s headquarters in September, when the Tobacco Merchant’s House opens as part of Doors Open Days. They can also be viewed online in a ‘virtual gallery’ accessible from the Doors Open Days website www.doorsopendays.org.uk.
