Planner Seek Local Knowledge on Flooding

The SIC Planning Service, which is responsible for assessing the risk of flooding in Shetland, has appealed for information from local communities and individuals.

Laura Duthie, a student who is helping the Service with their research, said:

“I only have five years of proper records relating to flooding in Shetland.  There are a few much older records, relating to events in Sandness in 1895, Northmavine in 1935 and Nesting in 1937.  It’s a bit like starting on a jigsaw where most of the pieces are missing.  It would be really helpful to have more information so that we can build up a better picture of past experience of flooding.  If anyone can remember an occasion on which a home was flooded – theirs or perhaps a neighbour’s or family member’s – it would be very useful to have that information.  It will help us identify where the greatest risks may be.”
