Winners of the Young Writer Competition
This year's Shetland Library/Shetland Arts Trust Young Writer Competition has produced six young winners, whose work reflects a variety of interpretations of the composition theme "Island Life".
Winner of the Primary 1-3 category is Hakki Spence with his short story "The Mad Painted Bull", while Kirsten Williamson picks up the Primary 4-5 prize with her poem "Robbie Redbreest in da Crumbs". Kayleigh MacKenzie is first in the Primary 6-7 age group with her poem "Tae a Kettlin".
The Secondary 1-2 winner is Elyse Jamieson with a one act play entitled "Dis Modern Wyes", and Rachel Burns is the Secondary 3-4 winner with her short story "Bonnie - the story of a wandering sheep in Whalsay".
Winner of the Secondary 5-6 prize is Hannah Nicholson, with a one act play "Da High Hills o Deltin". Hanna also wins the Young Writer Dialect Prize.
The organisers and judges were particularly impressed by the high number of entries in dialect which this year's competition attracted.
Prizes of £30, plus a book, for each category winner will be handed out by the author Julia Donaldson at WordPlay 2005 on Saturday 10th of September at 1pm.
Thanks goes to all the sponsors of WordPlay for thier support towards this event.
