Parents as Partners in Education
The Education Service is holding an open day of discussion and information sharing on Saturday 12 November. The event will be held at Sound Primary School in Lerwick from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm, with a buffet lunch included.
Education at all stages is going through a period of change, with the introduction of “A Curriculum for Excellence” for all pupils from 3 to 18 years. May Sweeney is the National Co-ordinator, and she has been invited to speak to the audience.
The other major change in Education will be the way in which parents will be encouraged to become more involved in their children’s education. Celia Burn, the Parental Involvement Co-ordinator for Scotland, will be speaking on this issue. She will be able to inform the audience of the progress of the Parental Involvement Bill and its implications for School Boards.
After these addresses, there will be five different workshops for guests to attend. These will be on:
- The Contributing Parent
- Parental Support Workshop
- A Curriculum for Excellence
- Qualification Pathways
- The School in the Community
The morning promises to be very interesting and stimulating. A pre-bookable crèche for children aged 3 to 5 will be available, as will supervised play activities for children aged 5 to 11. Any parent or interested members of the public are welcome to attend. Brochures are available from Hayfield House, 01595 744000.
