iTea and Biscuits Drop-In at the Library
Shetland Library will be running a drop-in for anyone interested in eBooks, eAudio and eMagazines on Saturday 17 October. The library has been gradually increasing its range of free e-services over the last few years, with eAudio books added for the first time this summer.
One of the benefits of e-services is that free digital publications are available anywhere and at any time over the internet. They work on a variety of devices including tablets, smart phones, and computers.
David Thomson, Systems Officer for the Library, said “One of the best things about these new services is that they work with gadgets and computers that people already have. Services tend to work a little differently on each device or app though, so people often appreciate a little advice from Library staff to start using them. We hope that offering this drop-in will help with that.
“People can bring their own devices along to the event, but it’s not necessary to bring anything. The library has a range of Android, Apple and Microsoft devices that are pre-loaded with free library publications, so people can judge for themselves just how well each service works on different platforms and across various screen sizes.
“Uptake of new e-services from the library has been good, as magazines, books and audiobooks can be used almost anywhere at any time. Slow broadband speeds do make use more difficult in some areas, but because they can be downloaded it is not necessary to have an always-on internet connection, or to have the quickest broadband. These services are especially useful for people who find getting to the library or meeting a library van isn’t convenient – and they are all free for Library members.”
Links to all the Library’s e-services are available through their website at:

The iTea and Biscuits drop-in will run from 10.30am until 3.30pm on Saturday 17 October in the Old Library Centre, Lower Hillhead, Lerwick. Tea, coffee and snacks will be available throughout the day.
