Bourbon Dolphin
Shetland islanders have been expressing their sorrow at the tragic loss of life of the eight crew members of the Bourbon Dolphin, which capsized northwest of Shetland last Thursday.
The Convener of Shetland Islands Council, Sandy Cluness, said that letters of sympathy would be sent to community representatives in Norway over the next few days. "We share a long and close family history with our neighbours on the West Coast of Norway, throughout the centuries and in particular during World War II, and as a community deeply involved in both fisheries and the oil industry, we also have had to face our share of tragedies as a result of accidents at sea. When these catastrophes affect small close-knit communities, the consequences can be felt over lifetimes. We have shared the very private grief of the relatives, colleagues and friends, and have given what assistance we could over the past weekend."
The Convener indicated that it was his view that the community should be represented at the Memorial Service which would take place in Norway should the families consider this would be appropriate.
