Active Schools Easter programme proves popular

More than 300 children have so far taken part in Easter holiday activities that have been hailed as a success by organisers from the Council’s Active Schools Team and Shetland Recreational Trust.

Under the banner “West 2Day”, children of primary school age in the Westside had a chance to take part in a wide range of activities in the West Mainland Leisure Centre in Aith on Monday and Tuesday this week.

Wednesday and Thursday then saw plenty of energetic activity in Lerwick, with “LK 2Day” activities based around the Clickimin Leisure Complex and Bell’s Brae Primary School.

A diverse range of activities were on offer at each venue, including options such as cheerleading, table tennis, drama, water polo, and kayaking.   The emphasis was very much on being physically active; being creative; and having fun.    Healthy choices for lunch were also provided, including fruit and water.

Primary school aged children in the North Mainland will also have the chance to take part in  this type of event on Monday and Tuesday of next week, when “North 2Day” takes place in Brae.

Active Schools Manager for Shetland Islands Council, Philip Ashley-Smith commented “The response from parents and children so far has been tremendous and I am delighted that so many people have had so much fun.  I hope this format will be something that we can repeat again in the future.”

Active Schools is a Scottish Executive initiative with a focus on making more children more active more often.   The Active Schools Team in Shetland is based within the Community Development Service.
