Ross County FC delivers Easter soccer successes

Over 140 local children between the ages of 4 and 16 years old enjoyed top quality football coaching in Lerwick last weekend, thanks again to the efforts of visiting coaching staff from Ross County Football Club.

At the start of the summer football season, Ross County Community Coaches Martin Rae and Debbi McCulloch led eight junior coaching sessions on Saturday and Sunday on the Clickimin pitches and, for the youngest age groups, also indoors at the Clickimin Centre.  All sessions saw a full attendance and the occasional showers didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the young players to take part in the skills sessions and small-sided games.

Twelve local adult coaches also had the opportunity to gain a higher level coaching award as Scottish Football Association (SFA) Community Coach, Gavin Levey, also based at Ross County FC, took them through an SFA Level 2 coaching course.   This two-day course gave the coaches skills to conduct coaching sessions with groups of primary aged footballers and taught them how to adapt sessions for young players of mixed abilities.

This is the third visit to Shetland by Ross County coaching staff in less than a year.  They have offered coach education courses on each occasion, giving local football coaches the opportunity to benefit from the latest coaching techniques and gain formal coaching qualifications from the national governing body for the sport.

The Club’s coaches continue to be impressed by the support they receive in Shetland.  Gavin Levey commented – “It has been very satisfying on this visit to deliver sessions to both aspiring footballers, from as young as four years old, and to enthusiastic adult coaches working with local junior teams.  The feedback we have received in Shetland has again been very positive and we look forward to returning later in the year.”

The organisation of this project was a partnership between the Community Development Service of Shetland Islands Council,  Ross County FC and Shetland Recreational Trust.
