Cluny Fish takes over Shetland Smokehouse at Skeld

Shetland Islands Council is pleased to announce that following a high level of interest in the Shetland Smokehouse, a buyer has been found to take over the business venture.

Cluny Fish, a Buckie based smoker and curer of salmon and seafish with over 40 years of experience, successfully bid to take over production at the main building at the Skeld site.  Cluny Fish will take on the Shetland Smokehouse brand and recipes and will quickly move to resume production in order to retain the international customer base that has been built up by the Smokehouse.

This good news means that job opportunities will be secured in this rural area of Shetland.  It is also hoped that Cluny Fish will be able to act as ambassadors for the high quality Shetland produce which has been prepared in the Smokehouse in the past.

SIC Vice Convenor and Councillor for the area, Florence Grains said she “was very pleased that the company had moved quickly and would retain employment in the West Mainland which is recognised as a fragile area”.

Sandy Cluness, SIC Convenor said “he was glad that the Council has been able to assist to secure the future of this important facility for value added products and wished the new company every success”.

SIC Head of Economic Development, Willie Shannon said “it was encouraging to have seen such a high level of interest to develop the smokehouse with a range of ideas for the factory from a number of interested parties”.

Cluny Fish made contact with the development agencies in Shetland at the end of last week and they were happy to engage with their proposals.
