Shetland Islands Council works together with Europe
Shetland Islands Council made representations to Brussels this week and met with key EU officials and MEP’s to discuss progress on Shetland’s outstanding state aid complaints whilst taking forward the opportunities for Shetland to work with Europe in developing schemes in the future within the European regime.
Shetland led the delegation visit, which included Shetland, Scottish Government and UK officials working together on Shetland’s case to met with EU officials to discuss ways forward for Shetland.
It is expected that the rulings on the outstanding state aid complaints within the fisheries and agricultural sectors will be announced by Europe before the end of the year. Shetland is hopeful that these rulings will not result in the total claw back of funds from recipients of these monies.
Vice Convener, Councillor Josie Simpson said “ We had a successful visit in Brussels and both Shetland, Scottish and UK Government officials worked well together to put the case forward for Shetland on our outstanding cases. Furthermore, a crucial part of this visit was to be able to build up dialogue between the officials for taking forward relationships to ensure Shetland’s continued ability to provide investment in our local economy and community. “
Councillor Leslie Angus, Shetland Islands Council, European Spokesperson noted that
“Shetland’s economic development and prosperity is closely linked to our relations with the European Union. I am optimistic that with the support of the Scottish Government and the liaison with the EU following our visit, there is considerable scope for Shetland to come ahead.”
