Junior Road Safety Officer Presentations

The Junior Road Safety Officer Scheme has been developed by Road Safety Scotland as part of a national strategy to help reduce the number of child casualties on our roads.

Children from Shetland Schools have been appointed as Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) for the last year. They are responsible for highlighting road safety issues within their school to other pupils, teachers and the community.

Throughout the year they will be required to carry out four main tasks including, creating and maintaining a prominent notice board, running school competitions, giving class or assembly presentations and using the website (www.jrso.com). The JRSOs are supported during their year in post by an individual at the school along with regular visits from their local Road Safety Officer.

Road Safety Scotland launched the JRSO scheme in 2002 as part of a national strategy for road safety education in all Scottish schools. Working with their local Road Safety Officers, primary schools in Scotland are encouraged to appoint two JRSOs from Primary 6 or 7 for a one-year period, to be road safety champions in their school.

With road traffic accidents being the largest single cause of child death in Scotland, the aim of the JRSO scheme is to empower children to highlight road safety issues within their school and to help reduce the number of child deaths and casualties on our roads.

On Friday 26th June 2009 in the Town Hall Chamber, a Presentation day was held to award this years JRSO’s with their certificates. The JRSO’s from each school also gave a small presentation of their work over the last year.
