Community Campaign to Save Levenwick Post Office Continues
The community campaign to save the Levenwick Post Office continues as Shetland Islands Council submitted a petition on behalf of the local community to the Post Office Network Change Programme, objecting to the proposed closure of the branch.
The petition attracted over 250 signatures from residents and business owners from all over the South Mainland, as well as some from Lerwick and Bressay, protesting against the removal of the Post Office under controversial plans to close 2,500 of the network of 14,300 branches across the United Kingdom.
The petition was accompanied by a letter from Convener of Shetland Islands Council, Sandy Cluness, which declared the support of the Council for the campaign, and highlighted the importance of the branch to the local area.
The Levenwick Post Office is one of two post offices in Shetland to face closure under the Network Change Programme, the other being Camb Post Office in Yell. The Post Office is currently undertaking a consultation process in the Northern and Western Isles, which includes Shetland. This consultation is due to end on Wednesday 16 April 2008.
