Shetland Island's Council Economic Development Grant Approvals

April-May 2008

Following the recent formation of the Shetland Island’s Council Development Committee in April, every cycle details on scheme approvals made through the Council’s Economic Development will be reported. 

Grant offers within the following schemes were made during April and May:  

  • Agricultural Contractors scheme
  • Shetland Rural Development Scheme
  • Shetland Agriculture Business Scheme
  • Rural Shop Improvement Scheme
  • Marketing Development Programme

Within the agricultural sector, the largest grants approved were for equipment or building investments.  Offers were made to Messrs A & D Hunter towards a new agricultural shed (£25,000) and Raymond Garrick towards the purchase of machinery under the Agriculture Contractors Scheme (£12,375).  There were several grants for fertiliser offered under the Shetland Agriculture Business Scheme to Messrs A G Flaws (£1,350); F Tulloch and Partners (£855); D G Nicolson (£67.50), J L Sandison (£877.50); and W A Fraser (£493.50).

Three businesses have been offered grants under the Rural Shop Improvement scheme.  Scalloway Post Office has been offered £3,184 towards the costs of moving the Post Office.  In Hamnavoe, Jane Thomason Inkster, trading as, Andrew Halcrow’s shop is to invest in electronic point-of-sale computer equipment and a grant of £10,000 has been offered.  Refrigerated display equipment is to be installed by JWJ (Whalsay) Ltd and the grant offered was £6,919.

The Economic Development Service also provides various kinds of assistance towards marketing and business development.  Böd Ayre Products Ltd was offered a grant totalling £6,775 for product analysis and development of marketing material.

Mark Sinclair trading as Phatsheep Photography was offered a grant of £1,440 towards participation in a three-month summer at the Lighthouse, Glasgow which is a leading centre for architecture and design in Scotland.  Kenneth Rae, trading as, Shetland Jewellery was offered £600 towards attendance at a trade show in Aviemore.

Finally within the Marketing Development Programme, a new website and logo for 60 North Recycling Ltd was awarded a grant of £3,403.
