Shetland Islands Council Launches First Shetland Food Directory
Shetland Islands Council is pleased to launch its first Shetland Food Directory. The Directory is freely available in booklet form and is also available online at www.foodshetland.com.
The Directory will be available this weekend at the Flavour of Shetland at the Victoria Pier and on an ongoing basis through Visit Shetland, the Shetland Museum and Archives and the Shetland Library. Copies of the Directory will also be available to all Companies in the Directory for distribution to their customers. Any business or individual who would like copies of the Directory should contact Fiona Dally on 01595 74 4964 for more details.
The Directory highlights the variety of local produce that is available in Shetland and provides an easily accessible resource, for locals and tourists alike, which will list local producers and where their products are available. The Directory also includes a useful local “eating out” section.
Vice Convener of Shetland Islands Council, Josie Simpson said, “This is an excellent project to promote our exceptional quality local produce and the Directory provides essential information for consumers to be able to track down local and seasonal food. Using more of what we grow and make is also a vital way of enhancing our economy and reducing our carbon footprint, through reduced food miles”.
The launch of the Directory coincides with a visit from sixteen Slow Food enthusiasts from Italy during the Johnmas Foy. The links were forged between the Council’s Economic Development Service and a slow food enthusiast from Italy who made contact last year for more information about Shetland food and subsequently visited Shetland last summer. The group will be meeting local producers, visiting local tourist attractions and enjoying the Flavour of Shetland over their two-day visit to the isles.
