Excellent School in North Roe
Inspectors visited North Roe Primary School in May and, using their new 6 point scale to assess schools, which introduces a Level 6 meaning Excellent, acknowledged North Roe as the first school in Shetland to merit an excellent.
They found the following key strengths:
- Pastoral care and the school’s promotion of equality and fairness
- Relationships among pupils and staff and with parents and the community
- Quality of teaching
- The outstanding quality of pupils’ art work and their creative use of information and communications technology (ICT)
- Teamwork among staff and their commitment to improving the work of the school
- The leadership of the Head Teacher
HMI Nick Pepin, who worked as a Head Teacher in Ollaberry some time ago, was particularly impressed with the atmosphere and quality of relationships among pupils and staff, which he described as “outstanding”. The minor action points required by HMIe - such as developing provision in drama - have been included in the school’s improvement plan for next session.
Helen Budge, Head of Schools, said that the hard work of all the staff and pupils at North Roe Primary School has been acknowledged in this report. She was delighted that North Roe had achieved an excellent in climate and relationships.
