Shetland Library: tales from the crypt

A treat is in store for all book lovers who like to browse: the Shetland Library is to open its reserve stock area to the public for two nights next week.  For those folk who have always been fascinated by the piles of books that are conjured up on request from a mysterious basement, this is the chance to see where they reside.

“So many folk have commented enviously that they would love to have a rake in the basement”, says Customer Service Librarian Karen Fraser, “so we thought it was time to let them go for it. A lot of our stock is kept in reserve areas not open to the public - it can all be requested and searched for in the online catalogue, but that’s not quite the same as being able to see and handle the physical books.”

“On Monday and Thursday evenings next week we’ll have the basement area under St Ringans open for folk to browse and borrow. It’s also a chance just to see the lovely renovation job that was done to turn this into a good working area. We can’t have the basement open all the time as we don’t have enough staff for that, but if next week proves popular we’ll try and do it more often.”

“More of our overflow stock is stored in other areas, including the basement of the old library next door. That basement’s not suitable for general public access, but what we’ll try to do, if people are interested, is take a few folk at a time across to see it.”

The basement is open on Monday 12th June and Thursday 15th June from 6 – 8 pm.
